Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Dish
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 medium apple, peeled and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for streusel)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for streusel)
  • 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed (for streusel)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a small 8x8 baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, stir together 1 cup flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the softened butter, egg, and milk to the dry mix and stir until just combined into a smooth batter.
  • Fold in the chopped apple and 1 teaspoon cinnamon until evenly distributed.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared dish and spread it level.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the remaining 1/4 cup flour, brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
  • Cut in the cold butter cubes until the mixture forms coarse crumbs, then sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the streusel looks golden.

Notes

Serve slices slightly warm so the streusel stays crisp against the soft cake. If you want a bit less sweetness, reduce the brown sugar in the topping by half. Leftovers keep well covered at room temperature for two days and reheat nicely in a low oven for a few minutes to restore texture.
