Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Square Baking Pan
  • Whisk

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup black cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 8 candy eyes
  • 8 thin black licorice strips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a small square pan with parchment paper.
  • Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl, then stir in the sugar until smooth.
  • Add the eggs one at a time and mix well after each addition.
  • Stir in the black cocoa powder, flour, and salt until no dry streaks remain.
  • Fold in the dark chocolate chips, then spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 20 to 22 minutes until the center looks set but still soft.
  • Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into four squares.
  • Place two candy eyes on each square and add two short licorice strips below them to form whiskers.

Notes

Cut the licorice strips short before placing them so they stay in place on the fudgy surface. If the brownies feel too soft for decorating, chill them for ten minutes first. Black cocoa gives the color and flavor, so skip regular cocoa if you want the full dark effect.
