Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Pastry Brush

Ingredients

  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Unroll both pie crusts on a lightly floured surface and cut each into two circles about 5 inches wide.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the diced apples, caramel sauce, cinnamon, and sugar until the apples are evenly coated.
  • Place one quarter of the apple mixture in the center of each dough circle.
  • Fold each circle in half to form a half-moon shape and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the egg with the water to make an egg wash.
  • Brush the top of each hand pie with the egg wash.
  • Cut two small slits in the top of each pie for steam to escape.
  • Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until the crust turns golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let the pies cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Brush the crust with extra egg wash and sprinkle with the remaining sugar before baking for a light crunch on top. Store cooled pies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days and reheat briefly in a 350-degree oven to restore crispness. Use a tart apple variety like Granny Smith to balance the caramel sweetness.
