Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Large skillet
  • Rolling pin

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 8 ounces Italian sausage
  • 1 large orange bell pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 475°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll the pizza dough into a 12-inch circle on the prepared sheet.
  • Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edge.
  • Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.
  • Remove the sausage from its casing and cook it in a skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbled. Drain any excess fat, then scatter the cooked sausage over the cheese.
  • Slice the orange bell pepper into thin strips. Arrange some strips into triangle eyes, a nose, and a jagged mouth to create a jack-o'-lantern face on top of the pizza. Use the remaining strips as regular toppings around the face.
  • Brush the crust edge lightly with olive oil. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly. Let the pizza rest for a few minutes before slicing.

Notes

Slice the bell pepper into even strips so the face holds its shape during baking and does not slide off the melted cheese. If the sausage releases a lot of fat while cooking, drain it well before adding it to the pizza to keep the crust from becoming soggy. Leftovers reheat best in a 350°F oven for 8 minutes rather than the microwave.
