Mulled Red Wine with Cinnamon Stick Wands
Course Drink
Cuisine American
- 1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 orange, sliced
- 6 whole cloves
- 2 star anise pods
- 8 cinnamon sticks
Pour the red wine into a saucepan and add the brown sugar, half the orange slices, cloves, star anise pods, and 4 of the cinnamon sticks.
Heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it reaches a gentle simmer. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
Reduce the heat to low and let the wine steep for 15 minutes without boiling.
Remove the pan from the heat and strain out the solids if desired, or leave them in for extra flavor.
Ladle the mulled wine into four mugs and add one of the remaining cinnamon sticks to each mug to serve as a wand.
Use a full-bodied red wine like cabernet for best results. If the drink tastes too sweet after simmering, add a splash more wine to balance it. The cinnamon stick wands can be reused for a second batch the same evening.
