Mummy Caramel Apple Hand Pies
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Knife
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 8 candy eyes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out both pie crusts on a lightly floured surface. Cut each crust into two 5-inch circles for a total of four bases.
  • In a mixing bowl, stir together the diced apples, caramel sauce, cinnamon, and sugar until the apples are coated.
  • Spoon the apple mixture into the center of each dough circle, leaving a half-inch border around the edge.
  • Cut the remaining dough scraps into thin strips. Lay the strips across each filled circle in a crisscross pattern to resemble mummy bandages.
  • Brush the dough strips and edges with the beaten egg.
  • Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until the crust turns golden.
  • Remove from the oven and let the pies cool for 5 minutes. Press two candy eyes onto each pie while still warm.

Notes

Press the dough strips gently so they stay in place but still allow some filling to peek through. If the caramel sauce is very thick, warm it slightly before mixing with the apples for easier spreading. Store cooled pies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one day and reheat briefly in a 300-degree oven to restore crispness.
