Orange Zest Sugar Cookies with Bat Wing Shapes
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie Cutters

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and creamy.
  • Add the egg, orange zest, and vanilla extract. Mix until fully combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually stir the dry mixture into the wet ingredients until a dough forms.
  • Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Use bat wing cookie cutters to cut shapes and place them on the baking sheet.
  • Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the edges turn lightly golden.
  • Let the cookies cool on the sheet for a few minutes before moving them to a wire rack.

Notes

Chill the dough for 20 minutes if it feels too soft to cut clean bat wing shapes. The orange zest stays bright even after baking, so skip extra flavorings. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days.
