Sparkling Blood-Orange and Basil Gin Cocktail
Course Drink
Cuisine American
Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Muddler
  • Bar spoon
  • Glasses

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces gin
  • 1 cup fresh blood orange juice
  • 12 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup
  • 16 ounces sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Blood orange slices for garnish
  • Fresh basil sprigs for garnish

Instructions

  • Place 8 basil leaves and the simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Muddle gently for 10 seconds to release the oils without tearing the leaves too much.
  • Add the gin, blood orange juice, and a handful of ice cubes to the shaker. Shake for 15 seconds until the mixture feels cold.
  • Fill four glasses with fresh ice cubes. Strain the shaken mixture evenly into each glass.
  • Top each glass with 4 ounces of sparkling water. Stir once with a bar spoon to combine.
  • Add a blood orange slice and a basil sprig to each glass before serving.

Notes

Muddle the basil just until fragrant to avoid a bitter taste. If blood oranges are out of season, store-bought juice works but the color will be less vivid. Prepare the gin and juice base ahead and add the sparkling water right before guests arrive so the bubbles stay lively.
