Spiced Mulled Apple Cider with Star Anise
Course Drink
Cuisine American
Servings 4 people

Equipment

  • Large Pot
  • Ladle

Ingredients

  • 4 cups apple cider
  • 4 star anise pods
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

Instructions

  • Pour the apple cider into a large pot.
  • Add the star anise pods, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, orange slices, and maple syrup.
  • Place the pot over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  • Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the spices steep for 20 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Use a ladle to serve the cider into mugs, leaving the spices and orange slices in the pot or straining them out first.

Notes

Let the cider steep the full 20 minutes so the star anise can release its distinct note. If the drink tastes too sweet after simmering, add another splash of plain apple cider. Leftovers keep in the fridge for two days and reheat well on the stovetop over low heat without returning to a full boil.
