Church potlucks call for recipes that can feed a crowd without much trouble. These classic dishes have stood the test of time at church events and family gatherings. Each one uses simple ingredients and makes enough to satisfy big appetites. They travel well and hold up during a long serving table. You can pick a few to try for your next get together.

    Helpful Tips Before You Start

These recipes feed a crowd, so a few adjustments will help everything run smoothly at the potluck.

    Scale Up Ingredients Early

Most of these dishes start with standard amounts that easily double or triple. Measure dry goods and chop vegetables the night before to keep assembly quick on the day of the event.

    Choose Transport Friendly Dishes

Pick recipes with sturdy casseroles or foil pans that stack well in a car. Keep hot items in insulated bags and cold salads on ice packs to maintain safe temperatures.

    Prep Components Ahead

Cook meats or bake crusts one day early, then assemble right before leaving. This cuts down on last minute oven time and reduces stress when multiple dishes need reheating at the venue.

    Bring Extra Serving Gear

Pack two sets of serving spoons and a stack of paper plates with each dish. Church potlucks often run out of utensils, and having backups keeps lines moving.

Creamy Baked Macaroni and Cheese with Crispy Bacon

This macaroni and cheese brings a hearty, crowd-pleasing dish to any church potluck. The creamy cheese sauce coats every piece of pasta while the bacon adds a smoky crunch that balances the richness. It travels well and holds up on a buffet table without drying out.

It works best when you need something filling that appeals to both kids and adults. The texture stays smooth inside with a lightly browned top, and the bacon keeps its crisp bite even after baking.

    Equipment

    • Large Pot
    • Skillet
    • Saucepan
    • Baking Dish

    Ingredients

    • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
    • 6 slices bacon
    • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups whole milk
    • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the macaroni until just tender. Drain and set aside.
    • Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon, drain on paper towels, and crumble into pieces.
    • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for one minute. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
    • Stir in the salt, pepper, and 1 1/2 cups of the cheddar cheese until the sauce is smooth. Remove from heat.
    • Combine the cooked macaroni, cheese sauce, and crumbled bacon in the pot. Stir until evenly coated.
    • Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese over the top. Bake for 20 minutes until the cheese is melted and the edges are bubbly.

    Notes

Add the bacon right before baking so it stays crisp instead of softening in the sauce. If the sauce thickens too much while sitting, stir in a splash of milk before transferring to the dish. Leftovers reheat best in the oven at 325 degrees with a little milk stirred in to restore creaminess.

    Equipment

    • Large skillet
    • Mixing bowl
    • Baking dish

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound ground beef
    • 1 medium onion, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
    • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
    • 2 tablespoons chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup cornmeal
    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 large egg
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

    Instructions

    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain any excess fat.
    • Stir in the drained kidney beans, diced tomatoes, chili powder, cumin, and salt. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes so the flavors combine.
    • While the chili simmers, combine the cornmeal, flour, and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Add the milk, egg, and vegetable oil. Stir until a thick batter forms.
    • Pour the chili into an oven-safe baking dish. Spread the cornbread batter evenly over the top.
    • Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the batter. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes until the topping is golden and set.

    Notes

Make the chili base a day ahead and store it in the fridge. When ready to serve, add the fresh cornbread batter and cheese before baking so the topping stays light. If the chili seems too thick after simmering, add a splash of water before topping it.

    Equipment

    • Large pot
    • Mixing bowl
    • 1.5-quart baking dish

    Ingredients

    • 12 ounces fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
    • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 1/2 cups French fried onions, divided

    Instructions

    • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 5 minutes until they turn bright green and soften slightly. Drain and set aside.
    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
    • Add the drained green beans and 1 cup of the French fried onions to the bowl. Stir until the beans are coated evenly.
    • Transfer the mixture to a 1.5-quart baking dish. Spread it into an even layer.
    • Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of French fried onions over the top.
    • Return the dish to the oven and bake for 5 more minutes until the onions on top turn golden.

    Notes

Use fresh green beans for the best texture, but canned beans work if you drain them well first. Add the final onions only at the end so they stay crisp instead of softening in the oven. Leftovers reheat best in a 300-degree oven for 10 minutes to restore some crunch.

    • Mash the sweet potatoes in a mixing bowl with the softened butter, 1/4 cup brown sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
    • Spread the mashed mixture evenly into a greased 8×8 baking dish.

    • Bake for 30 minutes until the topping turns golden and the edges bubble slightly. Let it rest 10 minutes before serving.

    Notes

    • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
    • 4 cups corn chips
    • 1 cup sour cream

    Instructions

    • Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks until no pink remains.
    • Stir in the taco seasoning and water, then simmer for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
    • In a large serving bowl, spread the shredded lettuce across the bottom to form the first layer.

    Equipment

    • Large Pot
    • Mixing Bowl

    Ingredients

    • 2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
    • 4 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
    • 3 celery stalks, diced
    • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
    • 1/4 cup yellow mustard
    • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

    Instructions

    • Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Add 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork, about 12 minutes. Drain and let them cool slightly in a large bowl.
    • While the potatoes cool, stir together the mayonnaise, yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, remaining salt, and black pepper in a small bowl to make the dressing.
    • Add the chopped hard-boiled eggs and diced celery to the cooled potatoes. Pour the dressing over the top.
    • Gently fold everything together until the potatoes are evenly coated. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors settle.

    Notes

Chill the salad longer if you want the celery to stay extra crisp against the softer potatoes. Use yellow mustard for the classic potluck tang, or swap in Dijon if you prefer a bit more bite. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for two days and taste best served cold rather than reheated.

    • 1 carrot, shredded
    • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed

    Instructions

    • Season the pork shoulder evenly with salt and pepper. Place it in the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours until the meat pulls apart easily with forks.
    • Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it with two forks. Return the shredded meat to the slow cooker and stir in the barbecue sauce until fully coated.
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded cabbage and carrot. Add the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, and celery seed. Stir until the vegetables are evenly coated.
    • Split the hamburger buns and divide the pulled pork among the bottom halves. Top each with a generous scoop of slaw and add the bun tops.

    Notes

Prepare the slaw a few hours ahead so the flavors blend and the cabbage softens slightly. If the pork dries out during reheating, add a splash of water or extra barbecue sauce before warming. Store leftover pork and slaw in separate containers to keep the slaw crisp.

    • 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 cup brown sugar

    • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with the 1/4 cup granulated sugar and cinnamon until evenly coated. Spread the apples in an 8-inch square baking dish.
    • In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, and brown sugar. Add the softened butter and mix with a fork or your fingers until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
    • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown.
    • While the crisp bakes, prepare the sauce. In a small saucepan, whisk together the milk, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, and cornstarch. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the sauce cool slightly before serving.

    Notes

Spoon the vanilla sauce over individual portions right before serving so the oat topping stays crisp. If making ahead for a potluck, bake the crisp the night before and reheat it uncovered at 300 degrees F for 15 minutes to restore some crunch. The sauce can be made up to two days ahead and stored in the refrigerator, then warmed gently on the stove with a splash of milk if it thickens too much.
